Evolver's structure mainly consists of a succession of 24 rotating frames supporting an enclosed space that visitors are encouraged to enter. As he or she progresses through the space, a concealed but uninterrupted 720° movement is unraveling along a transformed panorama.

This transformation occurs while inside a person is moving along a selective string of openings only to be caught peeling off a sequence of unexpected views from the original landscape.

Wobbling below and above a distant horizon, ground and sky have been reorchestrated into an orbiting panorama by a journey that has already culminated to where it started: A loophole on the skyline.

Sound Performance
During the Zermatt Festival in September '09, Evolver hosted the sound project Deviation: Alpaufzug. Creating a new electronic device inspired by the legendary Swiss Alphorn, the Deviation collective from Lausanne installed 6 sound sources. Deviation plays improvised music on devices every time different, created for the occasion, on the basis of sound equipment in close connection with the place or context of the performance.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION!:
A process for community-built bamboo relief housing
“Bamboo DNA's strength comes from its collaborative network of talented people... artists, builders, performance artists, and pretty much anyone who has an interest in seeing bamboo used in creative new ways.”

— Gerard Minakawa, Artist

This relief housing strategy and bamboo pod ‘peanut’ strategy grew out of a full-scale sculptural collaboration with Bamboo DNA and Natural Builders at the Coachella Festival of Arts and Music. The collaboration produced a primary ‘bamboo wave’ sculpture and a related range of quickly constructed ‘peanut’ pods. A small group of people with little more than their hands and split bamboo lengths may set up strong, tarp-coverable shelters for relief situations in a matter of minutes. The flexibility of the construction approach allows for any number of sizes and configurations and easy deconstruction and reuse.

Archinect Reviews: 'Designing for the Other 90%'

Reviewed by Quilian Riano

By now we are more than familiar with the numbers; 10% of the world's population owns 85% of the world's wealth (Brown, 2006), 17% of the world's population lives in extreme poverty, less than $1 a day, another 23% live in moderate poverty, less than $2 a day (Chen & Ravallion, 2004). We are talking about 40% of the population, 3.8 billion people or almost 3 times the total population of China, at the lowest end of the world's economic scale. When one is confronted with these overwhelming numbers and statistics it is hard to find any hope of being able to help change the situation. However, once we look closer, the statistics reveal an emerging market of consumers with a variety of design needs and a combined purchasing power of over $100 billion dollars a month. Keep in mind that we are still talking about the people at the lowest edge of economic indicators, once you add those in relative poverty, according to country, you have a whopping 5.9 Billion people or 90% of the world's population as potential clients.

Global Village Shelter

It is clear that the need is overwhelming and, in a sign that design institutions are beginning to notice it, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum addresses it in its 'Design for the Other 90%' exhibit. The exhibit includes a variety of design strategies that have taken 'helping the poor' outside the charity arena, and into the entrepreneurial design realm. Clearly, what the exhibit advocates is not profiteering from those in need, but rather for designers to work closer with the poorest clients to give them an opportunity to earn a productive life while remaining within their means. The exhibit itself is displayed in the garden of Andrew Carnegie's Fifth Avenue Mansion, now home to the Cooper Hewitt, giving the exhibit a luscious, if not ironic, backdrop. A series of small architectural interventions await outside creating a small village populated by the furniture and other objects that make up the rest of the exhibit. These small architectural interventions roughly break into two categories, shelters and public space pavilions.

There are many other simple and elegant solutions to the very real problems of the world's poor which I urge everyone to explore through the online catalogue. One that caught my attention particularly is the Solar Dish Kitchen, which was constructed in a collaboration with the community, architecture students, professionals such as James Adamson from the Jersey Devils, and artists. The dish is a lesson on how to smartly and appropriately use the environmental conditions of a site as part of a low-cost, low-impact architectural strategy. It is simple, cost effective, low-impact design solutions such as these, and not charity, that will help those people with the most needs around the world.

Dear All:

Lawrence

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The idea is that reused hemp sacks, in this case animal feed bags, are sewn together to form a dome-shaped structure. Then a series of “Life Elements” can be plugged onto the structure. The functions of these elements offer the potential of a doorway, a window, a cooking facility, sanitation and storage. Two doorway “Life Elements” can be connected to create a corridor between two ‘inflated’ spaces allowing for growth of the structure.

The construction is separated into prefabricated elements that can be assembled off-site or by a local cottage industry and “build-up process” at the site. The separation of the production process allows for a higher production rate and the elimination of the need for use of electricity at the construction site.

Once the mortar has dried teams then cut out excess hemp inside the life elements and let the bags out, which can be deflated for reuse. Internally you mortar and plaster the interior walls, creating a water-proof and thermal insulated shell. The housing unit can easily be combined with other units to create larger living space that adequately meet the need of the residents.

The team believes that adaptability as one of the main characteristics of the design. “we want to offer a transitional house that can be built easily, swiftly and inexpensively with local materials by anybody without special training. Since our model is highly flexible, it can be modified to other building types, such as schools or hospitals.”

Architecture for Humanity hosted an open competition to design five-year transitional housing for the returning people of Kosovo. The competition's goal was to foster the development of housing methods that would relieve suffering and speed the transition back to a normal way of life. Architects and designers from 30 different countries responded. We received more than 200 designs. From these, a jury selected 10 finalists and 20 notable entries. This proposal from Technocraft was one of those 10 finalists.

Cameron Sinclair

(1)Architecture for Humanity (人道建築組織)
Cameron Sinclair

(2)Habitat for Humanity (人道居住組織)
在英國,Shelter Project(安居計劃)

(3)Rural Studio(鄉村工作室)

Samuel Mockbee

Comment

(Fabrication)

(1)06 lsass caad future 2005
(2)Larry Sass SCI paper

(3)eCAADe-2005 LISBON SOWA A 001
(4)xCube web

This April, the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology hosted two lecturers from Taiwan: Ying-Chun Hsieh (謝英俊) and Sheng-yuan Huang (黃聲遠). Hsieh’s lecture, “Sustainable Construction in Community,” was possibly the most explicit example of how architecture can play a strong positive social and environmental role in the contemporary Asian context. Huang, titled his talk “In-Between Breaks,” where he presented a family of projects from the Yi-lan region elaborating his unique approach to political haggling and community oriented design. Both lecturers were invited by our relatively new Department Head, Yung Ho Chang (張永和) who arrived in Cambridge, Massachusetts from Beijing at the beginning of this academic year. Chang’s introductions to these lectures stressed the strong social conscience of both architects—a quality that is often rare in the lecture circuit of American architecture schools which is steadily veering towards the star system.

Hsieh, who delivered his lecture in Chinese with a student translator, began by announcing that he prized the opportunity “to be in such a technical institution,” so that he might actually “discuss technicalities” to a truly receptive audience. While this might have seemed a bit daunting at first, it soon became clear that for Hsieh, designing details represented a real opportunity to consider and intervene in some of the most basic social and environmental issues presented in architecture and construction. For example, noting that many indigenous Taiwanese people lacked work, Hsieh explained that he and his collaborators have designed several light weight steel assemblies that allow unskilled laborers to construct their own housing and community centers. The simple replacement of welded connections with screws, he noted, radically reduces the cost of framing while also making the construction process open to a far greater number of people. Once the tribal community with which he had worked fully absorbed the assembly process, Hsieh went a step further by aiding the tribes’ people to set up a low cost factory in their village. The factory, built on a budget of $20,000, mass produces Hsieh’s prefabricated steel elements so that they can be sold to other communities in need of low-cost housing. Hsieh called this an “Independent Construction System,” independent in the economic sense, all the while engaging in issues such as housing, labor and sustainability in a radically inventive way.

With Borders All Around, the Stateless Seek Home

Lawrence,
